What Sports Massage Actually Is

Sports massage is not a firmer version of a relaxation massage. It is assessment-led work on the specific tissue your sport loads over and over. An hour on a runner is spent almost entirely on calves, IT band, glutes and hip flexors. An hour on a padel player is forearm, shoulder and the thoracic spine. The therapist decides where the time goes after asking what you train, how often, and where it hurts.

The techniques are chosen for what the tissue needs rather than for how pleasant they feel. Effleurage warms and prepares the area. Cross-fibre friction works across scar tissue and adhesions rather than along them. Trigger point pressure is held on a knot until the referred sensation fades. Muscle energy technique has you contract against the therapist’s resistance so the muscle lengthens further on release than it would passively.

You do not have to compete at anything to benefit. Most people we treat are not athletes in any formal sense — they lift four times a week, run the Marina loop, play padel twice a weekend, or sit at a desk for ten hours and then train hard. Repetitive load is repetitive load.

The Four Types of Sports Massage — and Which One You Need

Most providers sell one treatment called "sports massage". There are actually four, they do different jobs, and booking the wrong one at the wrong time is worse than booking nothing.

Pre-event

Short and brisk — fifteen to thirty minutes, any time from about half an hour to two days before you compete. It raises tissue temperature and circulation and sharpens your sense of the muscle. It deliberately does not go deep. Deep work in the days before a race leaves the tissue sore and slow, and you will feel flat on the start line.

Post-event

Within two to twenty-four hours of finishing. Lighter than most people expect, because the tissue is already inflamed and does not need more trauma. The aim is to move fluid, settle the nervous system down out of its post-race state, and find out where you are actually sore rather than where you assumed you would be.

Maintenance

The one most people should be booking and almost nobody does. Every two to four weeks through a training block, unattached to any event. This is where the genuinely deep work happens, because there is time to be sore afterwards. Maintenance is what stops the small restrictions turning into the injuries in the next section.

Rehabilitation

Work around a diagnosed injury, in the later stages of healing. This runs alongside physiotherapy, not instead of it. If you have not been assessed by a physio or a doctor, get that first — a massage therapist can loosen the tissue around a problem but cannot diagnose what the problem is.

What We Are Asked to Treat Most in Dubai

Runner’s knee and IT band tightness

Pain on the outside of the knee that appears at a predictable distance and worsens downhill or down stairs. It is rarely a knee problem. The work goes into tensor fasciae latae, glute medius and the lateral quad. Bookings for this climb sharply from November as Dubai Marathon training blocks begin.

Shin splints

Diffuse ache along the inside of the shin, worst at the start of a run and again afterwards. Common in summer here because volume moves indoors onto treadmills and the surface, cadence and stride all change at once. Treatment is calf, tibialis posterior and the deep compartment, plus honest advice about load.

Plantar fasciitis

The first few steps out of bed are the giveaway. Work on the plantar fascia itself achieves less than work on the calf complex and Achilles above it, which is where the tension usually originates. See also our foot and reflexology work, which is a different treatment with a different aim.

Tennis and golfer’s elbow

Padel has made this one of the fastest-growing complaints in the city. Pain sits on the outside or inside of the elbow but the tissue that needs the attention is the forearm mass, and often the shoulder and upper back that are compensating for it.

Lower back from desk work plus lifting

The most common presentation of all in Dubai: nine hours seated with hip flexors shortened, then a heavy session. The back is where it hurts; the hips and thoracic spine are usually where the cause is. If your back pain is not training-related, back massage may be the better fit.

DOMS after a hard block

Delayed onset muscle soreness peaking twenty-four to seventy-two hours after unfamiliar work. Massage will not remove it, and anyone who tells you it clears lactic acid is repeating a myth — lactate is gone within an hour of stopping. What a session does reliably do is reduce how stiff and guarded you feel while it passes.

When to Book Around Your Training

Timing changes the result more than pressure does.

A reasonable rhythm for someone training seriously is every two to three weeks, moving to weekly in the heaviest phase of a block and easing off in the taper.

Training in Dubai’s Heat Changes What Your Muscles Need

From roughly May to September, training here is a different physiological problem. Sessions move indoors or to five in the morning, sweat rates climb and hydration slips, and the calf and hamstring cramping that follows is not a technique failure — it is fluid and electrolytes.

Two practical consequences. First, tell your therapist honestly how hydrated you are; heavily dehydrated tissue is more sensitive and does not respond well to aggressive work, and a lighter session that day is the better call. Second, the switch from outdoor running to treadmill volume changes your stride and loads the shins and Achilles differently — which is exactly why shin complaints spike in July and August rather than in marathon season.

What Happens in the Session

The therapist arrives with a professional table, fresh linen and everything else the session needs. Setup takes about five minutes and you need roughly two metres by two metres of clear floor.

Before any hands-on work there is a short conversation — what you train, how often, what hurts, what you have already been told by a physio, and what is coming up in your calendar. That last question is the one that decides how deep the session goes. Then sixty, ninety or one hundred and twenty minutes of focused work, mostly on two or three areas rather than evenly over the whole body.

You should expect to be asked for feedback throughout, and you should give it. Pressure you are bracing against is not doing the work — a tensed muscle cannot be released. Afterwards you will get specific guidance on hydration, heat or ice, and which two or three stretches will actually hold the result. Mild soreness for a day is normal after deep work. Sharp pain during it is not.

When Sports Massage Is Not the Answer

Tell us before booking if any of these apply, and expect us to decline or adapt the session:

A therapist who agrees to work deeply on any of the above is telling you something about their training.

Licensed, and Accountable For It

Every therapist sent to you holds a Dubai Health Authority licence and is background-checked before taking a single booking, and carries the licence to appointments — ask to see it. The business is also registered with ESMA and MOHAP. That combination is worth checking against whoever else you are considering; most home-massage providers in this city claim one of the three, and a good number claim none.

You choose whether a male or female therapist attends, and it is confirmed before dispatch rather than settled at your door. Bookings run twenty-four hours a day across every area of Dubai we cover.

Questions Athletes Ask

How is this different from a deep tissue massage?

Pressure is not the difference. Deep tissue work is about depth applied across an area. Sports massage is about the tissue your sport specifically loads, assessed against what you are training for and when you next compete. A sports session may well be lighter than a deep tissue one if you have a race on Saturday.

Will it hurt?

Parts of it are uncomfortable, particularly trigger point work, which often reproduces the sensation you came in with before it eases. It should never be pain you have to hold your breath through. Pressure you brace against achieves nothing.

How soon before a race should I book?

Deep work no closer than three days out. A short, light pre-event session inside forty-eight hours is fine and often helpful. Never book your first ever sports massage in race week — find out how your body responds when nothing is at stake.

How often should I go?

Every two to three weeks through a training block for most people, weekly in the heaviest phase. Once a month is enough if you train two or three times a week without a specific goal.

Should I do anything afterwards?

Drink more water than usual, keep moving gently rather than sitting still for the rest of the day, and skip the hardest session on your programme for twenty-four hours. Heat suits chronic tightness; ice suits anything acutely inflamed.

Can you treat an injury a physio is already handling?

Yes, and that is often the ideal arrangement. Tell us what the physio has diagnosed and what they have asked you to avoid, and the session will work around it.

Do you cover early mornings?

Yes. Five and six in the morning are among the more requested slots in summer, for exactly the reason you would expect.
